Shortcut

This project documents the bizarre traffic in the Canggu area of Bali, Indonesia.

Canggu is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island, with visitor numbers commonly estimated at over two million each year - a significant number for such a small area. People come from all over the world, merging with local life to create a diverse and vividly colorful crowd. Movement never stops, and the chaotic traffic has become an essential part of everyday life - a shared collective experience.

In Bali, and especially in Canggu, a shortcut isn't just a faster route. It's often a narrow, intimidating path that winds between rice fields, houses, or trees. Designed to bypass the main roads, these shortcuts are, ironically, often the most congested spaces, creating moments of unexpected proximity and tension.

I spent over three months capturing these flows of traffic and the people within them. The images present some of the most curious moments, revealing the contemporary reality of Canggu

Just look at at!

The variety of characters and situations you encounter in traffic jams is insane — sometimes it feels like immersive theater

Idk what to do with this frame. One the one hand I like it. But on the other these are some stray dogs playing on a road while other pictures show dogs on bike. So this one feels a bit off

In Bali bike is transport for a whole family

Rain in Canggu has a rhythm of its own - warm, tropical, and often surprisingly calming. During the rainy season, short but heavy downpours sweep through the rice fields and beach cafés, leaving the streets glistening and the air fresh with the scent of earth and ocean. Even under grey skies, Canggu keeps its relaxed charm, with surfers waiting for the next clear break and cozy cafés filling with the sound of rain on rooftops

Sometimes shortcuts

Going this corridor is a quite intimidating experience. This passage connects two streets unreachible otherwise, of course if you don't want to spend extra 20 minutes taking a distant bypass route
